This Fintech Got Cut in Half, and Tuesday's Report Tests Whether It Deserved It

A beaten-down fintech reports before Tuesday's open. Here's the setup.

In partnership with

SoFi Technologies (NASDAQ: SOFI) has lost about half its value over the past year while revenue kept climbing at a 40% clip. Tuesday morning's third-quarter report is where that disconnect gets tested.

Ticker: SOFI | Sector: Financial Services | Market Cap: $18.8B

30‑Second Take

Why now? SoFi reports third-quarter results before the open on Tuesday, October 27, with the call at 8 AM ET. The stock heads into it near its 52-week low, after Thursday's tech sell-off handed the Nasdaq its steepest drop since early June.

The stock is trading in the mid-$14s, just above its 52-week low and more than 50% below its high from the past year.

On October 15, options traders bought 451,283 SOFI calls in a single session, about a quarter above the usual daily pace.

That's not a screaming signal on its own, but it shows traders are willing to bet on a rebound with the stock pinned near its lows.

The business itself isn't broken. Second-quarter adjusted revenue jumped 40% to a record $1.2 billion, and in July management raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $4.75 billion to $4.85 billion. The stock is down because higher rates hit a lender that carries its loans at fair value, not because growth stalled.

That gap between what the business is doing and what the market is paying is the setup.

Trade Setup

Time frame: Swing to medium-term, four to 12 weeks

Edge type: Mean-reversion plus unusual options flow

This is a bet on a growth fintech whose valuation got squeezed by rates and risk-off selling, not by a change in the business.

Beta of 2.33 means SOFI moves more than the market in both directions, so size your position with that in mind.

Chart

1-Month Trading Summary: SOFI fell about 11% over the past month, sliding from the mid-$16s to the mid-$14s as rate worries and the tech sell-off hit high-beta names.

The stock has lost nearly half its value this year and is sitting just above its 52-week low near $13.86.

Volume ran heavy on the worst days, topping 60 million shares around October 15 against a three-month average near 51 million. That's the kind of profile where a bounce, if it comes, tends to be sharp.

Bull Case

Why It Works

SoFi is a growth fintech that just posted record revenue and keeps adding members and products.

That's not the profile of a business in trouble. It's the profile of a business the market is treating like one, because rate fears hit lenders first and ask questions later.

The Catalysts

Tuesday's report is the big one. Management has a chance to show that hedges offset the fair-value hit from higher rates and that fee income keeps growing.

The options flow adds a second signal. Heavy call buying near a 52-week low means some traders think the selling has gone far enough.

Watch the guidance. SoFi's July outlook already assumed one to two rate hikes, so a reaffirmed or raised forecast would take a lot of fear off the table. Also watch fee-based revenue and the Technology Platform segment.

What The Numbers Say

Second-quarter GAAP revenue grew 43%, net income rose 61% to $157 million, and adjusted EBITDA climbed 44%. The stock trades around 31 times trailing earnings and about 20 times forward estimates, down from roughly 69 times at the end of last year.

You're paying a much lower multiple than a year ago for a business that's still growing fast. That's multiple compression without a business reason.

A move back to $20 is a reasonable 12-week target if the report lands well, roughly 35% upside from the mid-$14s.

Bear Case

What Could Break It

A 2.33 beta cuts both ways. If the Nasdaq keeps sliding, SOFI tends to fall faster than the index.

Rates are the bigger risk. SoFi carries nearly all its loans at fair value, so higher rates mark them down, and those losses hit earnings unless hedges offset them.

Credit quality is the second risk. The loan book has grown fast, and hiring has slowed sharply this year. If charge-offs start creeping up, the growth story takes a hit no matter how good the revenue print looks.

Watch the delinquency commentary on Tuesday's call closely.

The Valuation Risk

The Fed raised rates in September and meets again on October 28, the day after SoFi reports. If policy stays tight for longer, funding costs and loan valuations stay under pressure.

A fintech trading at a growth multiple cannot afford a quarter where NIM compresses and loan origination slows at the same time.

How To Size It

Options flow is a signal, not a guarantee. Those calls can expire worthless if the market keeps selling, and earnings can gap the stock either way, so size small going into Tuesday.

This is not a load-the-truck trade. This is a tactical swing setup where you want defined risk and a stop you will actually honor if $13.86 breaks on volume.
