30‑Second Take

Why now? 2025 has been kind to the language learning app – and its future looks even brighter. With momentum on its side, it’s up 65.9% so far this year already. Last week’s earnings call painted a picture of a rapidly expanding business at the top of its game, which makes it such an interesting prospect amid its AI-powered growth plans. It beat analysts’ expectations with 37.7% year-on-year sales growth, while the non-GAAP profit reported was 20% higher than anticipated.

5-Day Synopsis

Confirmation of Duolingo’s growing market share and future earnings potential have seen a steady shift into a higher gear over the last two weeks. In the last five days, the stock price has increased by 5.22%, though at times that gain has ticked above the 22% marker.

The stock opened at $505.00 on 09 May and peaked at a high of $544.93 on the 14th. It closed at $540.68 that same day. It’s dealt with some recent volatility but remains within touching distance of its 52-week high.

Bull Case

Core Thesis – Duolingo is a language learning app with a freemium model which uses AI and a gamification model to help its users learn languages like Spanish, French and German.

Catalysts - The company’s Q1 2025 earnings report comfortably surpassed Wall Street expectations. The company confirmed that its daily active user base had grown by 49% year-on-year, with sales up 38% and earnings by 26%. It has plans to integrate even more AI powered features, and with a highly efficient customer acquisition model and strong brand, it expects to grow its user base even further. Its 72.7% gross margin is also an attractive proposition for investors. The company has revised up its 20205 forecast to $996 million in revenue from a previous figure of $978.5 million.

Valuation Upside - Price targets vary, with some analysts suggesting a $456.92 target and others $ 515.00.

Technical tailwind – Duolingo is in a significant growth phase. Ttechnical indicators support a bullish outlook in the near term, though there is room for volatility.

Bear Case

Key Risk – The language learning market is saturated, with established brands and newcomers alike all jockeying for position. The key risk for Duolingo is in one of those rivals making a sustained play for its user base with lower prices and greater incentives. With inflation pressuring household discretionary spending, Duolingo will need to be mindful of offering value for money to hold off rivals like Babbel.

Macro/sector headwinds: Duolingo is operational in dozens of countries, leaving it vulnerable to economic shifts in local markets. Evolving privacy laws could also cause operational and compliance headaches.

Competitive Threat: Duolingo’s revenue per user is relatively low at an average of 1.6%. This means it will need to continue to expand its user base and look to ways to increase ARPU growth without becoming so focused on monetization features that rivals can edge in. AI, which Duolingo uses extensively in its application could also be an (ironic) threat, as free tools like Google Translate become more accurate and convenient.

Crowded-trade concern: The stock may be subject to higher levels of volatility with short sellers looking to capitalize on an incredible run of form.
