The CEO Bought After a 35% Drop: Here's What He's Betting On

The stock fell 35% in a month. Then the CEO wrote a seven-figure check.w

Investors dumped this stock in September after the company paused enrollment in its depression and bipolar trials over side-effect reports.

The same week, it filed for FDA approval in epilepsy, the indication that actually drives the near-term story, and management has now put its own cash behind that view.

Xenon Pharmaceuticals

October 5 – Pre‑market
Ticker: XENE | Sector: Healthcare (Biotechnology) | Market Cap: $3.68

30‑Second Take

Why now? On September 30, Xenon CEO Ian Mortimer bought 30,000 shares on the open market at $37.38, about $1.12 million of his own money. CFO Tucker Kelly bought too, taking the insider total to roughly $1.7 million.

That buying came right after a rough month. On September 17, Xenon submitted its FDA application for azetukalner in focal seizures. In the same release, it paused new enrollment in its depression and bipolar studies after reports of side effects, and the stock fell as much as 30% the next morning.

So the market punished the whole company for a problem in the longer-dated psychiatry program. The epilepsy filing, which rests on a clean Phase 3, is still on track. That gap is the trade.

Trade Setup

Time frame: 3 to 9 months

Edge type: Insider buying after an overdone sell-off

You're betting the epilepsy filing carries more weight than the psychiatry pause. The first checkpoint is the FDA's decision on whether to accept the application for review, which usually comes within about 60 days of submission, so around mid-November.

If the FDA accepts the filing and the psychiatry update doesn't get worse, the stock has room to win back part of its September losses. If the side-effect findings spill over into the epilepsy label discussion, you'll want to know early and step aside.

Chart

1-Month Trading Summary: XENE is down roughly 35% over the past month, most of it in the single session after the September 17 release. Since then, it has spent most days trading near its 52-week low in the high $30s.

Insider purchases lifted the stock on October 1, but it's still far below where it traded in early September. That puts you near the price management just paid, not chasing a bounce.

Bull Case

Why It Works

Azetukalner's epilepsy data is strong. In the Phase 3 X-TOLE2 study, reported in March, the 25 mg dose cut monthly focal seizures by about 43% more than placebo, with highly significant results at both doses tested.

Focal epilepsy is a big market, and roughly a third of patients still don't get their seizures under control on existing drugs. A new mechanism with that kind of efficacy has a real commercial path if it reaches pharmacies.

The Catalysts

The insider buying is the near-term signal: a CEO doesn't usually put seven figures into his own stock two weeks after a 30% drop unless he thinks the market overreacted.

Next comes the FDA's filing acceptance decision around mid-November, followed by the full review and an approval decision later in 2027. Any clarity on what caused the psychiatry side-effect reports, and whether enrollment resumes, would also help the stock.

What The Numbers Say

At around $6 billion, Xenon is priced well below where it traded before September, even though the epilepsy filing is now in. The stock is about 45% below its 52-week high.

There are no earnings to value yet, so this comes down to the probability of approval and how big the launch can be. The psychiatry programs were part of the bull case at the old price. You're now getting the epilepsy story at a discount, with psychiatry treated as close to worthless.

Bear Case

What Could Break It

The side-effect reports are the big unknown. If the FDA asks hard questions about safety, that could slow the epilepsy review or lead to a more restrictive label, even with strong efficacy data.

The psychiatry pause could also turn into a full stop. Depression was the larger long-term market, so losing it would cap how much the stock can recover.

The Valuation Risk

Xenon doesn't sell a product yet, so it relies on cash and outside funding to get to launch. A delay in the review or new data requests would raise the odds of a stock sale at depressed prices, which would dilute you.

How To Size It

Treat the insider buy as a signal, not a guarantee. Start small, and add only if the FDA accepts the filing and the psychiatry update holds steady.

This is a speculative satellite position, not a core holding. Size it so a bad FDA headline doesn't do real damage to your portfolio.

Quick Checklist

✅ FDA filing acceptance confirmed (around mid-November)
✅ Psychiatry trial update reviewed before adding
✅ Position size reflects single-drug biotech risk
✅ Entry close to the insiders' $37 purchase price
