Quantum Leap: The High-Risk, High-Reward Stock That Could Be Your Smartest Play Yet

Hello and welcome to Everyday Alpha, the daily newsletter showcasing a different stock opportunity every day the market is open. We give you laser-focused content to save you time and energy so you can make educated investment decisions quickly.

Rigetti Computing, Inc.

June 12, pre-market
Ticker: RGTI | Sector: Computer Hardware | Market Cap: ~$3.6B

30‑Second Take

Why now? Quantum computing is firmly in the financial and media spotlight this week after Nvida CEO Jensen Huang told a Paris conference that quantum computing is just a few years away from solving real-world issues.

His comments have sparked a gold rush for quantum computing stocks but if Nvidia is too rich for your blood at its current rate of $142.83, there are much more accessible stocks to own – and Rigetti tops that list.

RGTI’s stock price and investor confidence alike have soared in recent weeks.

While it has gained 18.34% in the last month, its current price of $12.72 still offers a much more accessible entry point for long-term, high-risk tolerant investors.

Chart

5-Day Synopsis: The last five days have been a rollercoaster ride for quantum stocks, with prices surging across the board.

RIGT stock has benefitted from this bullish push, with prices increasing 5.92%.

Interest has also increased sharply with volumes spiking from an average of 56.54 million to 177,071,514 million on June 11.

The week’s high of $13.56 also came that same day, after RGTI issued a statement announcing that it had completed a $350 million equity offering, giving it cash reserves of around $575 million with no debt.

Bull Case

Core thesis: Rigetti Computing specializes in scalable, modular quantum architecture.

It has patented its flagship multi-chip superconducting processor design, with the objective of scaling quantum performance via chip-tiling rather than monolithic chips.

Its operations see it cover the full tech stack, with hardware, firmware, software (Forest), and cloud services all falling under the Rigetti umbrella.

This is a strategic advantage, as it gives Rigetti a recurring revenue stream (via its cloud).

Catalysts: Rigetti has secured strategic partnerships with DARPA, DOE, NASA, NSF, NIST, and the US Air Force amongst others.

This means it’s well positioned to capitalize on federal quantum initiatives.

Valuation upside: The current analyst price target spans a range of $14.00 to a high of $16.00. The average target is $14.80.

Technical tailwind: RGTI technical indicators suggest further bullish momentum, with a strong buy signal.

The stock price has climbed above the 20-day moving average and has a comfortably mid-range Relative Strength Index (RSI) (~56.3).

Bear Case

Key risk: Rigetti is currently ploughing money into research and development, meaning its balance sheet shows an operating cost of $21.6 million versus revenue of $1.5 million.

It’s important to note its $350 million equity offering secured in the last few days means it now has zero debt and a considerable war chest to finance its operations.

Macro/sector headwinds: Rigetti trades in tandem with AI and semiconductor stocks—but lacks the revenue and adoption story those sectors currently enjoy.

If the AI hype cycle cools or faces regulatory pushbacks, quantum stocks may suffer collateral damage.

Competitive threat: With quantum computing expected to generate $1.3 trillion in value by 2035, there’s plenty of competitors keen to secure a slice of the profits.

Rigetti faces its toughest competition from several larger companies, including powerhouses like Microsoft, have much deeper pockets and larger teams.

This could see them pulling ahead of Rigetti.

Crowded-trade concern: Quantum computing stocks are high-risk, long-term investments.

They’re vulnerable to rapid shifts in sentiment and legislation, any occurrence of which could spark a loss of investor confidence and sharp losses.
