Its Biggest Owner Keeps Buying, and the Stock Just Handed You a Dip

Its biggest shareholder keeps buying, week after week. Here's the setup.

The largest shareholder of a major US annuity company has been adding stock on the open market all month. The shares just slipped off a 52-week high, and earnings are a week away.

A CRM so smart, it updates itself.

HubSpot's CRM is so smart, it now updates itself. Calls get logged and summarized the moment they end. New leads get researched and a first outreach drafted, automatically. Deals move forward on their own, with next steps flagged before you have to ask.

Even the one repetitive task you've been meaning to fix can now run itself, no code required. Customers using it are already seeing the difference.

This isn't the CRM you have to work hard to figure out. It's the one already working before you log in.

Corebridge Financial, Inc.

October 27 – Pre‑market
Ticker: CRBG | Sector: Financial Services (Life Insurance and Annuities) | Market Cap: 15.45B

30‑Second Take

Why now? Nippon Life Insurance, Corebridge's largest shareholder, has filed a string of Form 4s this month showing open-market purchases, including about 347,000 shares on October 16 and another 193,000 on October 20, both around $35.

The stock then slid 4.1% last Friday on heavy volume, its first real dip after tagging a 52-week high the day before.

Those purchases run through a Rule 10b5-1 plan Nippon Life adopted in August, so they're scheduled, not a reaction to inside news. That's actually the point.

A strategic owner that already holds roughly 130 million shares decided this summer it wanted more, and it's still executing.

That steady bid under the stock is your setup.

Trade Setup

Time frame: Swing to medium-term (3 to 9 months)
Edge type: Strategic-holder accumulation plus a pre-earnings pullback

You're riding alongside a buyer that knows this business cold and has committed to adding shares on a schedule. The dip gives you a better entry than the price Nippon Life paid last week.

Corebridge also pays $0.25 a quarter, a yield just under 3% at current levels, so you're paid while you wait.

Chart

1-Month Trading Summary: CRBG is roughly flat over the past month, trading in a tight band between the low $33s and mid-$35s before tagging a 52-week high of $35.64 intraday on October 22 and slipping 4.1% to $34.13 on Friday.

That's a stock coiling near its highs, not one breaking down. It's up about 12% this year.

Friday's drop came on roughly 8.5 million shares, close to double the three-month average. Heavy selling into a buyer that keeps showing up can hand you a cleaner entry, so decide before the November 2 print whether you want in.

Bull Case

Why It Works

Corebridge is one of the largest US annuity and retirement-savings providers. It earns the spread between what its investment portfolio yields and what it credits to policyholders.

With the 10-year Treasury yield hovering around 5% after the Fed's September hike, that spread business earns more on new money than it has in years. Higher-for-longer is a tailwind here, not a headwind.

The Catalysts

Nippon Life keeps buying. Its Form 4s show purchases on several sessions this month under the plan it adopted on August 7, and its stake now sits around 130 million shares.

The old overhang is gone, too. AIG sold its last roughly 25 million Corebridge shares in May, so the stream of secondary offerings that capped the stock for years is over.

Then there's the November 2 report. Watch the buyback pace, net flows in fixed and indexed annuities, and any comment on Nippon Life's long-term plans for its stake.

What The Numbers Say

The stock trades around 19 times trailing earnings and under 7 times forward estimates, with a yield just under 3% on a $1.00 annual dividend.

It's up about 12% this year, roughly in line with the S&P 500. This isn't a crowded momentum trade, which leaves room if the report lands well.

Bear Case

What Could Break It

Corebridge is a spread lender in insurance clothing. If credit spreads widen or a credit event hits commercial real estate, private credit, or structured products in its portfolio, you'll feel it.

Insurance balance sheets look great until they don't.

The Valuation Risk

Rates cut both ways. The same high-yield backdrop that lifts new-money spreads also pressures the market value of existing bond holdings, and a sharp rally at the long end would fade the tailwind.

The 10b5-1 plan also has an end date. If Nippon Life stops buying, the steady bid under the stock goes with it.

How To Size It

Insurance earnings are lumpy. One quarter of actuarial assumption changes, reserve adjustments, or alternative-investment markdowns can swing the headline number around the print.

Don't size this one like a utility. Start with a partial position and add if the November 2 report confirms the story.

Quick Checklist

✅ Thesis still valid after today's close (Nippon Life purchases confirmed on SEC Form 4)
✅ Volume confirms move above key levels (watch for a close above the $35.64 high)
✅ Catalyst date double-checked (Q3 results Mon Nov 2 after the close, call Tue Nov 3 at 9 AM ET)

That’s all for today’s Everyday Alpha. We’ll have a new pick for you every morning before the market opens, so stay tuned!
