An Open Door Isn't an Order, and That's Your Opportunity
A beaten-down drone maker has a new Australian sales route. Orders are the test.
A defense technology company has opened another route to sell its attack drones in Australia. You get an export opportunity, but you still need signed orders before calling it a turnaround.
You built the audience. Can you reach them?
You can have thousands of people following your work and still need an algorithm’s permission to reach them. Creators know the drill: you post, you pray, you check the numbers, you try again tomorrow.
A newsletter changes that relationship. On beehiiv, you can build a subscriber list you own, reach readers directly, and turn their attention into a sustainable business with subscriptions, sponsors, a global ad network, and more.
AeroVironment, Inc

October 30 – Pre‑market
Ticker: AVAV | Sector: Industrials | Market Cap: $6.85B
30‑Second Take
AeroVironment can now pursue direct commercial sales of its one-way attack systems in Australia, a route the company discussed in its October 14 commentary. For you, that means another potential purchasing channel, rather than relying only on government-to-government sales.
Separately, its October announcement with Australian munitions company NIOA outlines possible local production, integration, distribution, and support. You should read the fine print: that memorandum of understanding is non-binding, and commercial work needs separate agreements and approvals.
This is an export-conversion idea, not an earnings-gap trade. Your upside depends on the company turning those openings into funded business while improving the economics of work it has already won.
The stock has fallen rather than rallied over the past month. You are considering a potential recovery, not buying a confirmed uptrend, and the position should reflect that distinction.
Trade Setup
Time frame: Swing to medium-term, six to 12 weeks
Edge type: Australian market access and potential order conversion
Watch for a definitive Australian order with a disclosed value, delivery schedule, and funding. A local-production framework helps the sales pitch, but you cannot put an unsigned opportunity into the revenue column.
For a starter position, wait for the stock to stop making lower lows and hold a rebound on a subsequent pullback. If you want less uncertainty, wait for the first funded commercial milestone and accept that you may pay more.

Chart

1-Month Trading Summary: AVAV declined about 12% over the past month and sits well below its 52-week high. You should treat the Australian opening as a possible reason for sentiment to improve, not evidence that the stock has already turned.
The price trend argues for patience while the commercial announcements give you something specific to monitor. A sustained recovery and a funded order would be stronger evidence together than either one alone.
Bull Case
Why It Works
AeroVironment sells autonomous aircraft, precision-strike systems, and other defense technologies. You are buying an operating supplier with existing customers, not financing an unproven product concept.
Australian customers could gain another way to buy and support those systems, while local manufacturing could make the offering more useful over time. Your thesis is that easier procurement and stronger in-country support eventually produce more business, not that an announcement guarantees it.
The Catalysts
The next useful development would be a definitive sales, manufacturing, or support agreement that spells out commercial commitments. You should look for who is paying, what is being delivered, and when the work turns into revenue.
Management's next results will also show whether funded backlog is converting into deliveries without sacrificing profitability. The market calendar points to December 8 for that report, but you should treat that date as an estimate until the company confirms it.
What The Numbers Say
Fiscal first-quarter revenue was $480.5 million, up 6%, and funded backlog reached $1.5 billion as of August 1. That backlog represents firm orders with appropriated funding, giving you a firmer starting point than the Australian framework.
Management maintained fiscal 2027 revenue guidance of $2.125 billion to $2.225 billion and adjusted earnings guidance of $3.02 to $3.34 per share. You still need to separate those adjusted figures from the quarter's $5.1 million GAAP net loss.
Bear Case
What Could Break It
The Australian collaboration may never become a meaningful source of revenue. Export approvals, customer budgets, local-production negotiations, and competing suppliers can all delay the outcome you are buying.
Execution at the existing business matters just as much as new market access. If delivery problems or integration costs absorb the benefit of new orders, you could own a better sales story without better shareholder returns.
The Valuation Risk
Using the rounded share price and management's adjusted earnings range gives you roughly 38 to 42 times fiscal 2027 adjusted earnings. That is not a distressed valuation simply because the stock has fallen sharply.
The gap between adjusted and GAAP results also deserves your attention. First-quarter results included $43.4 million of intangible amortization and other non-cash purchase-accounting expenses, so a cheap-looking adjusted multiple would not tell the whole story.
How To Size It
Start smaller than you would in a profitable business with a confirmed uptrend. You are taking both commercial-conversion risk and price-trend risk, and a stop order cannot protect you from every overnight gap.
Do not add just because the shares get cheaper. Add only if the stock stabilizes and the evidence improves, or step aside if new commercial announcements keep arriving without funded commitments.
Quick Checklist
✅ Direct commercial sales pathway discussed by the company, not an assumed contract win
✅ NIOA memorandum is non-binding; definitive agreements and approvals still matter
✅ Existing funded backlog supports the business, while the share-price trend calls for patience
